Welcome to my Web site. I'm a Chicago musician, composer, arranger, and teacher. I enjoy playing all the saxophones and clarinets but I particularly enjoy the baritone sax and bass clarinet. Music is such a joy to me that I work in many areas and styles of music.
Performer
I am the founder and leader of The Mulligan Mosaics Big Band as well as a member of Jeru, Marco Polo, the Michael Ingersoll Band, and Orbert Davis's Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. I've released three recordings as a leader and am on at least a dozen recordings by other Chicago artists. My most recent release is Ted Hogarth and the Mulligan Mosaics Big Band Live at the Jazz Showcase which features arrangements recorded by Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band as well as arrangements by members of MMBB. Other recordings as a leader are Misconception, which was released under the Italian recording label Wide Sound, is a collection of original compositions with my sextet THC. Steps Taken was inspired by a trip to Cuba in 2000 where I studied at Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte with Orlando Sanchez and other master Cuban musicians.
My passion is playing the baritone saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet. My inspiration on these instruments is drawn primarily from Harry Carney, Gerry Mulligan, Jimmy Hamilton, and Barney Bigard. The range and sonority of the baritone and bass clarinet are very appealing to my ear and I strive to achieve a full, rich, and dark tone.
Composer
I received a Master's Degree in Jazz Composition with Distinction from DePaul University in 2005. My primary instructor was my good friend Tom Matta, www.thomasmatta.com. Tom is a fantastic writer as well as a wonderful bass trombonist.
I've composed and arranged for small groups and big bands on both original compositions, such as 'Children's Song,' and standards, such as 'When Lights Are Low.' I was recently commissioned to write a big band arrangement featuring tenor saxophonist and educator Mark Colby, www.markcolby.com.
I also write big band arrangements for middle school and high school groups. With more than a dozen years of experience as an educator, I write compositions and arrangements for younger musicians that are challenging, musically interesting, and often draw from the classic American songbook—characteristics that are often lacking in commercially available charts. Contact me about commissions.
Educator
I have a private teaching studio where I instruct middle school and high school woodwind musicians, and teach jazz theory and improvisation. I enjoy helping young musicians discover the joy of music and all the rewards that are the result of hard work and discipline. I'm proud to say that many of my students have won local and state awards and have gone on to successful college careers with scholarships.
I also teach master classes and clinics for middle school, high school, and college students.
As an adult with Attention Deficit Disorder, who has learned how to manage it successfully to professionally thrive, I am eager to help young students who face similar challenges. I have witnessed the growth and maturity among students who face similar challenges and I'm eager to share what I've learned with others. This is an area of music education I feel passionately about and you'll find future articles and information posted here on the issue.
